One of three individuals close to the late Meles Zenawi during his last days, in August 2012, was Kassu Illala (PhD). The other two were his widow, Azeb Mesfin, and his long time close confidante, Brehane G. Kirstos, gossip disclosed. Whilst serving as Ethiopia’s ambassador to the EU in Brussels, Kassu had hosted the late Prime Minister in his residence, at a time when Meles’s whereabouts was a very confidential matter, gossip recalls.
Kassu was also one of the few leaders and officials of the federal government to whom Meles reportedly had a soft heart, claims gossip. He was one of the few former student activists, who survived the slaughter of the military junta and went into exile in the late 1970s. This was along with others, including Dawit Yohannes, who partook in the founding congress of the EPRDF in the early 1990s.
An accomplished scholar by then, Kassu travelled to the rebel held territory of Hagere Selam, Tigray Regional State, in January 1991, to join the EPDM (now ANDM). Here, he and Dawit were elected to the 53-person high council of the newly formed party that was about to change the nation’s political dynamics forever.
He was the first to be appointed as economic advisor to Meles, when he was a president during the transitional government in the early 1990s, while also serving the ruling coalition as chairman of the SEPDM. This was after Abate Kisho was deposed in the early 2000s, gossip recalls. He was subsequently appointed as Deputy Prime Minister, following the formation of the new government in 1995, and head of economic affairs at the Prime Minister’s office.
In 2005, he was appointed as minister of Works & Urban Development, and served as a minister of Infrastructure prior to 2010. It was during his debut as chairman of the southern coalition of the ruling party, in 2001, that Kassu is believed to have mentored Hailemarima Desalegn, who took over the SEPDM’s chairmanship from him in 2002.
Then there was the talk of a power succession in 2010, where veterans of the party were to be compelled to leave their positions in the federal government and sent to overseas missions. Girma Birru was seen off to Washington, Seyoum Mesfin to Beijing, Mulugeta Alemseged to Rome and Kassu to Brussels, replacing Brehane.
However, his diplomatic stint has not lasted long. Following the death of Meles, he was recalled back home in 2013, by an administration run by a person who was once his successor, gossip says. Although he was installed as one of the four-strong strategic policy advisory team to Hailemariam, his recent appointment has brought him back to something relative to Meles.
Kassu has been appointed as the first director general of the Meles Zenawi Foundation – an organisation established to preserve the legacy of Ethiopia’s former Prime Minister, gossip disclosed. The Foundation, whose office is on D.A.R Sahara St in front of the Mrs Ford Memorial Elementary School (former Zenebework school), in the Kasanchis area, has recently gone through a complete makeover, with its board of directors being presided over by his widow, gossip disclosed. Kassa Teklebrehan, president of the House of Federation (the House), was elected as deputy chairman of the Foundation when it was launched in the Africa Union (AU) hall, back in March 2013, in the presence of regional leaders from Djibouti, Sudan and Uganda, gossip recalls.
Kassu now reigns over a Foundation whose start was oiled with cash, amounting to four million dollars, pledged by these regional leaders, according to gossip.

ተጠቃን ብለን የማንጮህ፤ ተዘረፍን ብለን የማንቆጣ፤ ሕጋዊ ስርዓት ተፋለሰ ብለን የማንበሳጭ፤ የድሃውና የስራ አጡ ለቅሶ ሰሚ ሳይኖረው የጭቆና አስተዳደር ተከናንበን የምንኖር ህዝቦች በመሆናችን፤ ኩራትና ክብራችን ዋጋ አጥቶ፣ ሰላማዊ የፖለቲካ ትግል ታፍኖ እያየን በልቶ በማደር የኑሮ ግዴታ ብቻ ስለተጠመድን ብቻ ነው።
በጭካኔ ክብረ ወሰን የሰበረው መለስ ዜናዊ ምልክቶች ከኢትዮጵያ ምድር ተነቅለው መወገድ ይኖርባቸዋል።
ለሱ ሐውልት ማቆም የሚሻ ቢኖር
ከመለስ ዜናዊ ጋር በጭካኔ የሚመትሩት አገር ለመመስረት ጫካ የገቡት እነ ኦነግ፣ ኢሕአፓ፣ ሻዕብያ፣ ጀብሃ፣ መኢሶን፣ ወዘተ ጋር ተባብሮ ቢፈልግ ደደቢት በረሀ፣ አሊያም አሲምባ ተራራ፣ ቢያሻቸው ሞቃዲሾ ዚያድ ባሬ ቤተ መንግሥት ወይንም ናቅፋ ተራራ ላይ በእጁ መዶሻና አካፋ፤ በትክሻው ደግሞ የቻይናና ሩሲያን ባለ ቢጫ ኮከብ ቀይ ባንዲራ አስይዞ ሐውልት ያቁምለት።
በቀናት በፊት በየአካባቢው ፋሽስት ወያኔ ወያኔ በግንቦት ፳፣ በመለስ ዜናዊና በትግራይ ነጻ አውጪዎች ስም የሰየማቸው ወይንም የቀየራቸው የሕዝብ መገልገያዎች እየታደኑ ወደ ነባር ስማቸው እንዲቀየሩ የተጠናከረ ዘመቻ መከፈት ይኖርበታል ብለን ነበር 🙂 በዚህም መሰረት በየአካባቢው ፋሽስት ወያኔ በግንቦት ፳፣ በመለስ ዜናዊና በወያኔ ነጻ አውጪዎች ስም የሚጠሩ የትምህርት ቤትና የሌሎች የመገልገያ ስሞች እየታደኑ ሕዝብ በመረጠው መጠሪያና ወደ ቀድሞ ስማቸው እየተመለሱ ይገኛሉ።
በዛሬው እለትም ጎጃም ሸበል በረንታ ውስጥ በክፋት መምህሩ በመለስ ዜናዊ ስም «የሸበል መለስ ራዕይ አጠ/ 2ኛ ደረጃ ት/ቤት» በሚል ይታወቅ የነበረው የሕዝብ ትምህርት ቤት በአማራ ልጆች ተጋድሎ ሕዝብ በመረጠው ስም « ሸበል አጠ/2ኛ ደረጃ ት/ቤት በም/ቤት» ተብሎ እንዲጠራ ተወስኗል።
አሁንም በየአካባቢው ፋሽስት ወያኔ በግንቦት ፳፣ በመለስ ዜናዊና በሌሎች የትግራይ ነጻ አውጪዎች ስም የቀየሩ ወይንም የተጠሩ የቦታና የመገልገያ ስሞች እየታደኑ ወደ ቀድሞ ስማቸውና እንዲቀየሩ የተጠናከረ ተጨማሪ ዘመቻ መከፈት ይኖርበታል!
